  • Helpful, friendly staff (named staff praised)
  • Good on-site restaurants (Sails, Alloro, Coconut Cove)
  • Club Lounge and residence access
  • Family-friendly options (Ritz Kids) and multiple pools

Worth knowing — Property shows age / maintenance issues (cracks, peeling paint, holes in fabric) · Kids in the adult pool / pool management issues · Noise from guests' personal speakers · Expensive / value for money concerns · Snack bar limited hours and cashless issues

How guests scored the stay

  • Service9.7

Consistently praised — staff repeatedly described as helpful, friendly, and attentive (named staff like Bruce and Gwendolyn, strong Club Lounge service and helpful response after an accident).

  • Overall Experience9.4

Generally very positive — guests called stays 'incredible' and praised the staff and views; maintenance and value issues tempered some experiences but did not dominate overall sentiment.

  • Food and Beverage9.0

Positive — multiple mentions of good meals (Sails, Alloro, Coconut Cove) and excellent Club Lounge offerings and service.

  • Location8.5

Beautiful beachfront location on Turquoise Bay/Great Bay with sunrise views; somewhat remote (~40-minute drive from the airport) but otherwise well-located for scenery.

  • Cleanliness8.4

Standard quality for this hotel tier.

  • Amenities8.4

Good range of amenities (two pools, adult/kid separation, Ritz Kids, Club Lounge, residence access) but some operational issues noted (kids in adult pool, guest boom boxes, snack bar hours and cash policy).

  • Room Quality7.0

Mixed/negative — property shows its age with cracks in marble, peeling paint, holes in chair fabric and occasional slow water pressure, lowering room-quality sentiment.

  • Beautiful Property, But Not the Ritz-Carlton Experience We Expected (We Preferred the Westin)

    4/10

    annepX2394TH · Couples · 2026-08-26

“My boyfriend and I spent our final night in St. Thomas at The Ritz-Carlton after spending three nights at The Westin, and unfortunately, our experience at the Ritz was underwhelming—especially considering the brand and price point. First, the positives: the property itself is absolutely stunning. The landscaping is lush and beautifully maintained, the pools are gorgeous, and the crystal-clear Caribbean water makes for an incredible setting. We also thought the food was quite good. Our room was comfortable and cozy, with a beautiful balcony overlooking the Caribbean. There is certainly a lot to love about the physical property. Unfortunately, the service and overall experience did not live up to what we expected from a Ritz-Carlton. We originally booked a standard resort-view king room using Marriott points. On the morning of check-in, the Marriott app showed that we had received a complimentary upgrade to an ocean-view Club Level king room. As Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members, we were thrilled and naturally assumed that being upgraded to a Club Level room meant we would have access to the Club Lounge. We were escorted to the Club building and taken to our room without anyone explaining otherwise. After unsuccessfully trying several times to reach the concierge by phone, I eventually walked all the way back to the lobby to ask about the lounge. Only then were we told that, despite being assigned a Club Level room, Club Lounge access was not included and would cost approximately $475 additional for our one-night stay. I understand that Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge access may be sold separately from the room itself. My frustration was with how misleading and poorly communicated the situation felt. If a guest’s reservation is described in the Marriott app as an upgrade to a “Club Level” room and the guest is physically placed in the Club building, it is very easy to reasonably believe that the “Club” portion of that upgrade actually means something. A simple explanation during check-in would have prevented the disappointment entirely. Check-in itself also felt unnecessarily cumbersome for a luxury property. After arriving, we were escorted to a separate concierge area to complete check-in and then waited for a bellman to transport us to our building. The entire process took roughly 20 minutes. It wasn’t terrible, but compared with the warm, seamless service we had just experienced at The Westin, it felt surprisingly inefficient. The biggest disappointment came later that afternoon. After enjoying the beautiful pools and a couple of frozen cocktails, we returned to our room looking forward to using the large soaking tub. When I turned on the faucet, the water came out noticeably brown/yellow and dingy. I let it run for several minutes, but the discoloration did not clear. I immediately called and was told someone would be sent to the room. Forty-five minutes later, no one had arrived. We eventually decided to take a nap and asked that maintenance address the problem while we were out for our 6 p.m. dinner. When we returned later that evening, nothing had been done. I called again and was once again told someone was on the way. After waiting approximately another 30 minutes, we were tired and ultimately cancelled the request and went to bed. We never got to use the tub. The discolored water itself was concerning, but what bothered us more was the complete lack of follow-through. Maintenance issues can happen at any hotel. What distinguishes a true luxury property is how quickly and attentively those problems are handled. Having to call repeatedly about visibly discolored bathwater and still having no one address it by the end of our one-night stay simply isn’t the level of service I associate with Ritz-Carlton. Perhaps our expectations were especially high because we had just come from The Westin St. Thomas, but the difference was noticeable. We found the Westin experience warmer, easier and more attentive overall. We felt genuinely taken care of there. Ironically, despite Ritz-Carlton being positioned as the more luxurious brand, if we returned to St. Thomas tomorrow, we would choose the Westin without hesitation. The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas is undeniably a beautiful resort, and we enjoyed the pools, scenery, food and spectacular Caribbean views. But beautiful grounds alone don’t create a five-star experience. At this price point—and particularly with the Ritz-Carlton name—we expected exceptional communication, responsiveness and attention to detail. Unfortunately, our stay felt much more “meh” than memorable.”

  • Not Worth It

“We just returned from our second stay at The Ritz Carlton, St. Thomas, and unfortunately, it will be our last. Our first visit was in 2012 and a lot has changed since then. We stayed in an oceanfront Club Level room, and while there were some positives, the overall experience fell far short of what we expected from a Ritz Carlton. We adore their Grand Cayman and Aruba properties. The biggest disappointment was the beach. The shoreline was extremely rocky all the way from the hotel side to the residences and covered with seaweed. We came to St. Thomas for a beach vacation, yet the ocean in front of the resort was essentially unusable for us. For a Caribbean resort, that was a major disappointment. Our room also had a surprising number of maintenance issues. The bathroom outlets didn’t work, the bathroom lights were strobing, the Wi-Fi and TV were so inconsistent they were practically unusable, and the air conditioning worked intermittently. These aren’t things we would expect in an oceanfront Club Level room at a property of this caliber. Pool service was another major issue. The pool staff were frequently absent and, when we did interact with them, not particularly friendly. On multiple occasions we had to set up our own chairs. At one point, my husband actually had to go behind the towel counter himself because no one was there. We also regularly got up and went to the bar ourselves to order drinks because there was no one around taking orders. Dirty towels and linens also sat inside the elevator right outside club lounge for almost 24 hours. Again, this simply isn’t the level of service we expect from the Ritz Carlton. To be fair, service elsewhere throughout the resort was friendly, and the Club Lounge was excellent. It’s a beautiful space, the service there was very good, and we felt the Club Level experience itself was worth the additional cost. One thing outside the hotel’s control but worth mentioning for anyone planning a trip: transportation around St. Thomas was very hit or miss. We encountered some unsafe driving, and several taxis we used did not have functioning seat belts. Ironically, the two best days of our vacation were the days we left the resort. We booked a private boat charter to island-hop and had an incredible day, and another highlight was visiting Lime Out. Those experiences reminded us of what we had hoped this Caribbean vacation would feel like. We wanted to love it, but between the condition of the beach, the maintenance problems in our room, and the lack of poolside service, we can’t justify returning. At this price point and under the Ritz Carlton name, we expected considerably better.”

  • AWFUL DEGRADING STAFF

“AWFUL MEAN STAFF: During check in, I wanted to make dinner reservations which is handled by the woman working directly across the check in desk, she is also the excursion booking person. I politely smile and say hi. She immediately gets aggressive, yells in my face and goes “WHAT DO YOU WANT?” with the dirtiest look on her face. I felt extremely degraded by her immediately upon my arrival. SHE NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. Since I didn’t want to cause a scene, I laughed in her face when she did that and she suddenly went quiet and was embarrassed. I will never forget how rude she was. - Room had no shampoo and several mosquitoes. -BEACH WAS AWFUL AND NOT SWIMMABLE. Murky water filled with rocks -Service was rude and slow, extra slow even though the hotel was at 30% capacity. - Good food, pool was nice -Hospitality was the worst I’ve ever experienced, don’t waste your money. The staff needs serious training and to fix the incredibly bad attitudes. It’s not hard to be a kind person.”

“An absolute dream resort. The service was impeccable. The staff, especially Karen, Bruce, Gladys were all exceptional. We had an incredible experience. We took the sunset cruise, had dinner at each of the restaurants and the concierge coordinated some private tours for us. First class all the way!”

“Awesome location and property. Staff was the best I have seen anywhere. Amenities were outstanding. The beach was perfectly clear. We were in need of water shoes for all the water activities that we had planned. And when we approached the staff at the pool and towel space, one of the managers there (I think her name was Alicia) went out of her way to purchase a pair of water shoes for us to use during our stay without any additional charge. It’s the details like that that make a resort experience that much more memorable. I recommend this property to anyone staying in the Virgin Islands.”

  • Disappointing

“Have been coming to the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas for 3 years now as part of a work-sponsored trip. Overall, the experience continues to get worse each year. First thing to note is the food is terrible - worst I have ever experienced at a Ritz property. The ladies at coffee shop consistently make a great morning latte but that's where the positives end. Italian restaurant was out of pizza and several other menu items one evening and it was clear that guests were waiting an extraordinary amount of time for their food (everyone was annoyed). Beach/pool food is overpriced while being mediocre at best. Pool is overcrowded and the loungers are outdated. The rooms are fine, nothing special. Lounge access is paid-for only, no access based on status. We largely spent our time off property this trip and our recommendation to the organizer was to move the event to a different property next year.”

  • Average property at best.

“I want to start by saying the customer service was great. My major complaint involves the uncomfortable room temperature. The thermostat read 66 degrees, however the room was also showing 77 or 78 degrees. The bathrooms had absolutely no air flow and it was miserable to shower unless you took a cool or cold shower. FYI - Wear comfortable shoes because the property is large and hilly. You have to walk up hills and stairs too get everywhere on the property basically.”

“Just returned from a week stay at The Ritz in St. Thomas. First, it is HOT. You have to be in the water or its very uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the service is not at all what a Ritz usually is. The staff is all very slow - "island time " is real but still not sure why. Everything took a LONG time - ordering water, etc. The communication between the staff is very poor. There are no-se-ums and mosquitos at night and they bite ! I had over 100 mosquito bites and the hotel did nothing to help with my discomfort. I am very disappointed in my experience at this Ritz. I have been too many Ritz Carltons and this by far has been my worst experience.”

“I stayed here in late June which is the start of the low season here. The hotel didn’t feel crowded as a result. It’s a nice property located on Turquoise Bay and Great Bay on the east side of the island. It’s about a 40 minute drive from the airport to the hotel. The hotel property itself is nice but shows its age in little things. Cracks in the marble and stucco, slow water pressure in the bathroom, peeling paint on some of the exteriors and holes in the chair fabric at Bluewater are a few examples. Still the service is good, people are friendly and the views are pretty. I had an ocean facing room where I could see sunrise but not sunset. The food and service at Sails (lunch) and Alloro was good (especially for island food). Special shoutout to Gwendolyn who was my server at Alloro. She is exactly the kind of excellent help you expect from Ritz Carlton. There is a Ritz Kids location and there are two pools (one kid and one adult). Beach is small but adequate. It’s expensive here but overall a good place.”

“5 out of 5, best of the best. We closed out our USVI vaca with a stay at the Ritz on St. Thomas and it was incredible. The staff gave us a 5 star welcome and a nice room upgrade. Bruce was fantastic, getting our bags and carting us around and making sure we had everything we needed. We had a fantastic dinner at Coconut Cove - recommend the beet salad and Caribbean Chicken pasta. The Club Lounge was so awesome, beautiful and delicious food and super friendly staff. Cant wait to come back!!”

  • Outstanding Service After a Rough Start

“As Marriott Vacation Club owners staying at Marriott's Frenchman's Cove and Titanium Elite members, we decided to visit The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas for drinks and to enjoy the property for the evening. Unfortunately, our experience did not start well. Upon arriving at the entrance, the gate guard refused to allow us onto the property. He informed us that The Ritz-Carlton was private, that reservations were required, and suggested that we visit a public beach or a public bar instead. I explained that we were not attempting to use the beach or resort amenities—we simply wanted to visit one of the resort's bars for drinks. The gate guard then stated that reservations were required even for the bar and that reservations could only be made online. We were directed to make a U-turn and leave the property. Confused by this response, I called the hotel directly. The hotel representative immediately informed me that we should have been allowed onto the property. While I was still on the phone, the gate guard asked to speak with the hotel representative himself. Only after that conversation were we permitted to enter. Fortunately, everything changed once we arrived inside the resort. Every employee we encountered was friendly, professional, and welcoming. The service at the bar was excellent, the property was immaculate, and the atmosphere was exactly what one would expect from a Ritz-Carlton. The views, food, drinks, and overall experience were outstanding. What could have been a very disappointing experience was completely turned around by the professionalism and hospitality of the resort staff. The contrast between our experience at the gate and the service we received everywhere else on the property could not have been greater. Management may want to ensure that gate personnel provide accurate and consistent information to visitors. Based on our experience, we were incorrectly told that reservations were required even to visit the bar, while hotel staff advised otherwise. Despite the rocky start, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would gladly return. The exceptional service we received from everyone inside the resort more than made up for our initial experience at the entrance. Special recognition goes to the hotel representative who took the time to resolve the situation and to the outstanding staff throughout the resort who made us feel genuinely welcome.”

“Our stay at The Ritz-Carlton was exceptional, and Larry played a huge role in making it unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, he went above and beyond to ensure every detail was handled with care and professionalism. Larry's warm personality, attention to detail, and genuine desire to make our experience special did not go unnoticed. He anticipated our needs before we even had to ask and consistently provided service with a smile. His commitment to excellence truly reflects the high standards of The Ritz-Carlton. What impressed us most was how he treated us like valued guests rather than just another reservation. His kindness, patience, and willingness to go the extra mile turned a great stay into an extraordinary one. Thank you, Larry, for your outstanding hospitality and for creating such a memorable experience. The Ritz-Carlton is fortunate to have someone of your caliber representing their brand. We look forward to returning and hope to see Larry again on our next visit.”

“We stayed here using our Marriott timeshare. What makes this place a step above are the people. From the time we arrived everyone was so welcoming. Everyone seems to love their job. Many pools to choose from and you don’t have to fight for a chair. Plenty of shade at the beach. All restaurants are walkable. Our housekeeping staff was just great. We tried all the restaurants and our favorite was coconut cove. Blackened grouper was superb. Service at all restaurants was top notch. If we ever go to St Thomas again this is our place to stay.”

“Dont go if you want a quiet relaxing vacation! Individual speakers around the pool people walking around the property on speaker phone everywhere. The staff however is very nice and accommodating. I don’t know about you but to me smart casual dress code means just that smart a nice relaxed look. Well it is not bare feet swim suit with cut off tee shirt and camo baseball hats with the brim turn backwards! I also don’t think it’s ok for the hostess to be on her speaker phone where I needed to ask her to please turn it off followed by various guests also on their speaker phone in the restaurant ! For $1100 a night plus fees and tax there are many more options too bad this place is beautiful but there are no rules very spring break feeling will never go there again we left early!”

“Everything was as expected for St. Thomas until check out. I was overcharged for a gratuity in one of the restaurants. I always take photos of all receipts that require a hand written gratuity. Sure enough, I discovered that an extra gratuity was added to my bill. When I submitted my receipt I was actually challenged by management about it. Instead of crediting my account immediately the emails I got were “we are sorry but we have sent this to the restaurant manager to look into this.” I got tired of waiting and disputed the charge with my credit card company which was immediately reversed. I highly recommend taking photos of all receipts for transactions at this property. As a travel advisor I will never recommend this property to my clients. Beware!”
