  • Beautiful property, disappointing service recovery and management response

    2/10

    G640UXjeremyl · Family · 2026-08-28

“We genuinely like Carmel Valley Ranch, which is what makes this review disappointing. We stayed here previously over Christmas when we only had Discoverist status and enjoyed the resort enough to return. This time, we came back on a regular weekday as Globalists and expected the experience, particularly the recognition of elite benefits, to be more seamless. Unfortunately, it was the opposite. We had already booked a Ranch Suite ourselves. At check-in, no complimentary upgrade was proactively discussed. We had to ask, and what followed was roughly 20 minutes of back-and-forth. We asked about a Vineyard Suite and were told they were sold out, which we completely understood. An Estate Suite, however, was available. We were initially quoted approximately $300 to upgrade. The front desk then discussed the price among themselves for about five minutes in front of us before coming back and saying that, because we were Globalists, they could offer it for $100. No one explained how either price was determined or whether $100 was an established Globalist rate. It felt more like negotiating an upsell than receiving a clear explanation of our benefits. The property’s VIP Manager later acknowledged in writing that they “weren’t able to get [us] a complimentary upgrade.” The Globalist welcome drink vouchers were also missed. They were not provided at check-in or before dinner. We only received them after dinner, after we had already complained about the arrival experience, so we effectively missed the opportunity to use them when they would have been useful. The next day, the messaging around late checkout was equally inconsistent. The VIP Manager wrote that their “typical Globalist late check-out time is 2pm.” The Managing Director later told us, in writing, that “The Globalist late check out time here is 1pm.” Even more strangely, the VIP Manager told us that she was willing to ask the next guests assigned to our room to “wait until 4pm to check-in” in order to accommodate our 3pm departure. The day before, we ourselves had been told that waiting until 4pm for an upgraded room was completely normal. Four p.m. is also the hotel’s stated check-in time. The Managing Director ultimately acknowledged in writing: “We certainly botched your arrival experience.” He also acknowledged that “the failure to get you the welcome drink we offer was a miss” and that the hotel needed to be more transparent in communicating options. I appreciated that acknowledgment. What was more disappointing was the follow-up. When I explained that several issues still had not really been resolved, his response included: “I’m ashamed to have to mention that we gifted you 2 bottles of wine and some snacks as an attempt to apologize for our shortcomings.” I would have completely accepted a straightforward answer that the hotel did not intend to offer any further service recovery. What I found unnecessary was the tone, which made raising unresolved concerns feel as though we were being ungrateful for amenities that had already been offered to apologize for earlier problems. The resort itself is beautiful, and aside from these interactions, we still enjoyed many aspects of Carmel Valley Ranch. That is exactly why this was so frustrating. We returned because we liked the property, but the handling of our Globalist experience—and particularly the management response afterward—significantly reduced our enthusiasm about coming back. The biggest issue was not any single upgrade or benefit. It was the lack of consistency, transparency, and proactive recognition throughout the stay.”

  • Not a good place for couples.

“Terrible place for a couple. Maybe ok with kids but very expensive. Marketed as luxury but falls short by a wide margin. Room titled a vineyard view but only saw a sliver of the vineyard. Not much privacy and no desire to use the outdoor tub, seemed useless. Property is very big and the shuttle to get around is sometimes quiet, sometimes overrun with drunk parents and rude children. Truly not a good experience. Priced similarly to the Auberge but felt more like a 3 star hotel at best.”

“We loved our stay at the ranch. The kids loved the property with all the animals, shuttles/different vehicles. We also saw some wild animals (deer, turkeys) which was a treat. Breakfast was excellent. We encountered just a couple of minor mishaps during our stay, but the team did their best to make it right. The shuttle service team is the absolute best! We never waited more than a few minutes for one. Happy Hour at the Clubhouse was excellent (felt that this was a hidden gem as we were the only diners during a sold-out weekend). For activities - the website has the most accurate information. Be sure to check that before planning any activities!”

  • Disappointing, over crowded and a bit rundown

    6/10

    802sb · Family · 2026-08-09

“The hotel was overbooked and also a bit rundown, which was disappointing. We were not provided the room with a forest view that we were booked. Instead we were "upgraded" to a suite -- I really dislike this disingenuous practice from hotels that provide you a room thats in an undesirable location looking at a parking lot and call it an upgrade. When I asked if we could be switched to the room type we had booked I was told the hotel was oversold and there weren't any other options including paying for a higher tier room or switching rooms part way through our stay. It's more that this bait and switch was not addressed that was very disappointing. I can understand the hotel is busy, but it would have been better if the staff had offered some other perk to offset the room issue. The room was very dark and some of the furniture and amenities were dated. I also wished the activities schedule included more options that were in the morning so that you could enjoy them before heading out for the day -- the majority of the activities are right in the middle of the day between 11am-3pm. Be aware that also the shuttle can take some time and places like the family pool could be over a mile away from your room.”

“One of the best kept secrets, Carmel Valley Ranch is a gem for families and couples looking for a retreat. The staff at CVR are the heart of this property that keep us coming back year after year. There are lots of activities from hiking to pickleball or you can just do nothing and enjoy the crisp, coastal air and smell of lavender that grows around the property. The new executive chef and pastry chef at Valley Kitchen are a great addition, and the food is better than we've had in recent years. 20 minutes from Carmel-by-the-sea is an easy drive for breakfast and stroll, or check out Point Lobos reserve for amazing views of the Pacific. Early mornings and evening can get chilly so bring layers.”

  • Disappointing and overpriced

    4/10

    T2420ZQnickv · Family · 2026-07-19

“We came here super excited to be going on our first getaway with our 3 month old. While the staff is genuinely friendly and the dining options are a high point, Carmel Valley Ranch significantly underdelivers on the premium experience it markets, particularly for families. The Cons: Frustrating Logistics: The check-in process is unclear, and the main parking lot/valet area is a zoo. Not as Family-Friendly as described: Despite being advertised as stroller-friendly, navigating the property with one is a massive hassle. There’s nowhere to walk a stroller at the top really, the main rooms are on a very steep slope and the path down to the actual good places to walk is either on a road with cars or a dirt path. Worse, requests for advertised family amenities—like a diaper pail— were never delivered on. Lacking Maintenance & Cleanliness: For the price point, the housekeeping and upkeep are unacceptable. The room had dirty floors, cobwebs in the corners, and visible scuffs and marks. I almost tripped over an exposed outlet that was covered in aluminum foil?? Overall just really dated and damaged facilities. The attached photos are only a small sampling. Poor Sleep Quality: The bed and pillows were highly uncomfortable, making it difficult to get a decent night's rest. The Pros: Service & Dining: The saving grace of the property is its people, who are universally nice and welcoming. The on-site restaurants also serve excellent food. Overall Verdict: I used a mix of points and cash with the Chase Edit to stay here and this was still the most overpriced hotel stay of my life. If I paid full price I would have been livid.”

From the moment we arrived, we felt like we had escaped into a peaceful luxury retreat surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and breathtaking natural beauty. The property is impeccably maintained, with stunning views in every direction. Whether you're walking the trails, relaxing by the pool, or simply enjoying the scenery from your room, every moment feels peaceful and rejuvenating. The rooms are spacious, beautifully designed, and offer the perfect balance of comfort and elegance. The staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely committed to making our stay memorable. Every interaction was friendly and professional, and the level of hospitality truly stood out. We left feeling refreshed and can't wait to return. Highly recommended!”

  • Amazing stay near Carmel

“We stayed at Camel Valley Ranch with our two young kids and loved how spacious the king suite was. Having that extra room setup for the children meant we didn't feel cramped, which makes such a difference on a family trip. There was a minor hiccup with opening the sofa bed for the kids on the first night, but the staff fixed it immediately the next day without any fuss. Omar from check in reception welcomed us and offered our children toy ducks that got them excited on day one. Everyone from the River Ranch to the cheese makers provided excellent service. The resort amenities were excellent. The heated pool at 89 degrees was perfect when the weather outside was only in the low 70s and cloudy. My kids wanted to stay in the water all day. The fitness center was spacious with plenty of equipment, and the bathroom felt almost like a spa with how clean and well-designed it was. As a Globalist, the in-room dining breakfast benefit was genuinely convenient. Not having to rush outside when the kids woke up hungry made for a peaceful, efficient morning start. The little complementary activities like meeting the cheese maker, greeting the animals, and making s'mores were nice touches. They weren't mandatory, but having those options available without extra cost was appreciated. We didn't get to any of the pay activities this time, but I'd definitely consider them for a next visit. The whole resort has this serene, recharging vibe that made it the perfect escape. I'd recommend staying at least two nights to really soak in the experience. The location is also convenient as a base to explore Carmel by the Sea or drive the scenic 17-Mile Drive, which is less than 20 minutes away.”
