Beautiful location. Vaga and the spa were excellent. The pool is tiny and the service there lacks. The fire pit rooms are worth it!

  • Beautiful Setting, Lacking the Polish of a Luxury Resort

    4/10

    Meander197320 · NONE · 2026-08-18

“Overall, the stay was disappointing for a luxury resort at this price point. The ocean views and direct beach access are beautiful, although the beach itself is quite rocky and not especially easy for swimming. Cleanliness and upkeep were the biggest issues: elevator buttons were greasy, outdoor furniture didn’t feel particularly clean, and fingerprints and handprints covered much of the glass throughout the property, including the restaurant’s ocean-facing glass. In the room, the countertops and finishes felt noticeably worn. We also had a broken beach chair brought out to us, despite other chairs being available, and eventually replaced it ourselves. The food was underwhelming, and we had issues with the room phone and accessing the in-room dining menu. Some team members were very friendly and helpful, while others were less so, although the hotel did make an effort to address our concerns. Overall, the property has a beautiful setting, but the experience lacked the level of polish, maintenance, and attention to detail I would expect from a luxury resort.”

  • Poor service - check your bill! Will not be back

    2/10

    dianabV9214WS · Couples · 2026-08-17

“Would never stay here again. The service and facilities are way below the price point. Our room was very nice - ocean view. This was the only highlight. The pool area is not very inviting - and much smaller than it looks in the photos. We did not bother to use it. They charge the usual very high resort and valet fees. Take cash if you want to valet because the app they use to tip the valet actually makes you pay a charge to give them a tip! The food in VAGA restaurant was ok, but not exceptional. The server proceeded to lecture my husband on how he should order his food. The real issue was the service and billing. The phone in the room did not work - something I saw in an earlier one star review. We had to call from our cell phone instead. Even then, you find out that you're speaking to a bot. I'm not sure that they actually want to speak to their guests. You would think that they were NOT in the hospitality sector. We tried to order breakfast room service through the tablet they provide in the room (because the room phone didn't work and we didn't want to speak with the bot). The tablet informed us that the approximate wait time was 55 minutes! Then there's the usual sign about them caring for the environment etc. It's fine to show you care for the environment (even though, let's face it, most hotels only do it to reduce their operating costs. It's all PR). However, it's another thing to say that while "your wellbeing and comfort are of the upmost importance... we are EQUALLY committed to preserving the environment. Maybe use the word "also" rather than "equally". Ranking the importance of your guests with other things is distasteful. In addition, the correct English word is "utmost" not "upmost" in this context. On to the billing.... we ordered a bottle of wine. Upon checkout, they had charged us around $45 extra to cover their additional service charges and taxes. I queried this with the reservations person (who DID have customer service skills) at check out and he agreed to reverse some charges for us. When we got home the next day, I received an alert on my credit card that Alila had charged us over $60 for something. I called them to query it. Once again I had to speak with the bot before the bot put me through to a real person in the general Hyatt reservations team who then had to place me on hold and try to contact the Alila reservations team. She then came back to me and said that the charge was for a bottle of wine and champagne from the minibar, none of which we consumed because we never consume minibar items in hotels. It was not an automatic trigger minibar. The said items were still in the minibar upon our checkout. They agreed to reverse those charges. Let's see if this occurs....given their extremely poor service to date.”

“poor customer service here, definitely not on par with the prices they charge. no beach service with umbrellas as you would expect with their location. front desk didn't offer us map or pool keys or hotel overview at check in and our room wasn't ready for 4 hrs after we checked in. phone in room was broken and didn't have cell service there, so couldnt call front desk when needed.”

  • Beautiful property, but ask about wedding bookings in advance ...

    8/10

    jgfernandez0801 · NONE · 2026-08-06

“My husband and 2 adult daughters enjoyed our stay at this beautiful resort, with 2 caveats. First, there were large wedding events (rehearsal dinners, ceremonies, etc.) taking place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This meant that non-ground level rooms, and pool availability was at limited. Secondly, the resort apparently provides local access to the pool area --- regardless of the level of guests. This created a problem on the Saturday of our stay, with drunken/rowdy local "bros" monopolizing the amenities and insulting guests trying to check their behavior. A damper on an otherwise nice stay. That said, the staff was extremely accommodating and the restaurant and bar servers were the wonderful. The food at Vaga -- breakfast and dinner -- was fantastic! The breakfast package is definitely worth it.”

  • Never staying here again

“Avoid this hotel. Honestly the worst experience I’ve had. The only positive here is the oceanfront room view. Other than that this hotel needs more staff. Unable to accommodate any early check in’s for any clients. There were so many people trying to check in early for a wedding but their staff was so limited and could not do it. The room was dusty once received. The room phone didn’t even work. You had to call front desk from your personal cell. No room service Friday - Sunday again because of limited staff. Take your business somewhere else. At least the staff was nice.”

  • Understated elegance and ease, panoramic views

    10/10

“Serene with beautiful views. Elegant rooms with natural minimalist decor. Each has balcony or a patio, some with fire pits, and most view views. We’ve stayed twice. Appreciate the beach butler service, and poolside service. Could use help on: pool amenities and food and drink aren’t available until very late morning. One area of the hotel has HVAC noise. Limited plant based vegan options: only at the coffee cafe at the road, none for dinner. Services that are offered are excellent, and everyone was helpful and positive. Enjoyed it and would stay there again.”

“The room is spacious and beautiful- elegantly appointed and the bed and linen are super comfortable. Balcony is nice. Everything is super clean. Beware - there is no shower door so the water floods half the bathroom. The property is well keep and the view is amazing, but the pool area is pretty tight and feels loud.”

“Because this hotel cost $1200/night and bc it wants to be a 5* resort, it gets 3 circles here. Room was not ready on time at 4:00. For this price, it needed to be ready. (It was 45 minutes late). When it was ready, the cleaning solution used in the room was very off putting and strong. Shower water pressure was extremely weak. This is not Motel 6. I am certain this was a discoverable problem prior to my arrival. No turn down service? Gorgeous location but the beach really is miserably rocky. Restaurant is fantastic. Very cute walking area. I had always wanted to try this hotel. too bad.”

  • Beautiful oceanfront resort with excellent service

    10/10

    683kexinl · Family · 2026-07-31

“My mother and I had a very comfortable stay at Alila Marea. As a Globalist using a suite upgrade award, I was upgraded to a beautiful and very spacious suite, which made the stay feel especially relaxing and memorable. The property feels polished, upscale, and thoughtfully designed. The oceanfront location gave us exactly the kind of peaceful resort atmosphere we were hoping for, and the morning yoga session was a wonderful way to start the day. The staff members we interacted with were consistently warm, helpful, and professional. The ocean itself was not quite as blue as I had imagined, but that is simply the natural coastal setting and not a reflection on the hotel. Overall, the resort itself was lovely, comfortable, and genuinely felt like a special getaway. I would happily stay here again.”

  • A disappointing stay for our 18th anniversary

    4/10

    Curious33529731411 · NONE · 2026-07-30

“While my husband and I had very high hopes for this anniversary trip to the Alila Marea, our overall experience was very disappointing. In short, there was a large wedding that seemingly took over the hotel for the weekend, leaving the other guests who were staying, with poor service and an unwanted party until 3am. Despite having reservations at Vaga, our anniversary dinner was very slow and not the level of service we were expecting. The most unfortunate part was the blaring music until the very early morning hours following the wedding. I woke on Sunday morning and felt irritated and tired when it should have been a very pleasant weekend. Additionally, housekeeping accidentally scooped up my pajamas and they were not to be found. Minor detail but when it’s added to the other disappointments, we can say we won’t be returning or recommending the Alila Marea. **We did enjoy the complimentary e-bikes and enjoyed taking them to Encinitas and the dinner we DoorDashed from Rosemaries was phenomenal.”

  • Not true luxury hotel

    2/10

    Natalie230708 · NONE · 2026-07-13

“We recently stayed at Alila Marea Beach Resort to celebrate my birthday, and unfortunately, the experience fell far short of what I expect from a luxury resort. From the moment we arrived, the staff did not feel warm or welcoming. Despite interacting with multiple employees throughout our stay—and despite my birthday being noted on the reservation—not a single staff member acknowledged it. While a birthday greeting isn't expected, it's a small detail that luxury hotels typically excel at, and its absence reflected the overall lack of personalized hospitality. Traveling with our baby, we requested a crib multiple times. After three separate requests and hours of waiting, no one followed up until nearly 10:00 p.m., when we had to ask yet again. By that point, it had become a frustrating experience that could have easily been avoided with better communication or proactive management. The food and beverage service was also disappointing. Orders were slow to arrive, and they were not always correct. At VAGA, my interaction with the manager was particularly surprising. While I was speaking with her, she kept her eyes on a clipboard, made no eye contact, and simply turned around to signal the hostess with, "Get them what they want." It felt dismissive and impersonal rather than attentive and service-oriented. Throughout our stay, I had the impression that the staff was more focused on enforcing the property's adults-oriented atmosphere than on providing genuine hospitality to the guests standing in front of them. Great luxury service is about making every guest feel seen, valued, and cared for. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. The property itself is beautiful, and the oceanfront setting is stunning. However, beautiful views alone do not create a luxury experience. Hospitality does. Based on our stay, the level of service felt more comparable to an average hotel than a true luxury resort. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, as the property has tremendous potential but the guest experience needs significant improvement.”

  • A Wonderful Place to Celebrate our Anniversary

    10/10

    FLB · Couples · 2026-07-07

“We had a lovely time celebrating our anniversary at this hotel. Our room was large and beautifully decorated with comfortable furnishings. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of counter space and one sink. There is a private toilet area also called the water-closet. The walk-in shower has nice features and is on the larger size. The hot water was instant which is always welcomed. There are plenty of drawers and closet space. The room has large windows and sliding glass door to a balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There is a pool area with plenty of comfortable seating and the pool area faces the ocean. We had both dinner and breakfast at the Vaga restaurant and the meals were delicious. The hotel is not directly on the beach, it is on a hill above the beach area which requires one to walk down many steps, then walk on a path to the beach. We did not use the gym or the spa but they are nice additions to the hotel. I definitely recommend this hotel.”

  • Stunning Pacific Views and Great Service, with a Few Minor Letdowns

    8/10

    J0hnny2023 · NONE · 2026-07-07

“We stayed in the Grandview Room, and the Pacific Ocean views were absolutely beautiful and exactly what we were hoping for. The front desk team was very helpful, and Francisco was especially attentive, assisting us with all of our reservations. Valet service was also smooth and efficient, with the staff staying very on top of things. There were a few drawbacks. The walls were thin, and we could hear our neighbors moving furniture and making noise. One of the automated screens and the fire-pit did not work during our stay, and the cold plunge looked a bit dirty, so we decided not to use it. Overall, this is a great option for a relaxing staycation with stunning ocean views. It is also conveniently located near Carlsbad Village, with great restaurants like Campfire and the Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie nearby.”

  • Not satisfied as a Globalist

    2/10

    Jet46090152758 · NONE · 2026-06-30

“I am writing to share some feedback regarding my recent stay at Alila Marea, checking in on June 21 and checking out today, June 22. Around 8:00 AM this morning, I called the front desk to request a late checkout. As a Globalist member, I understand this is subject to availability, but the response (man) I received was highly unprofessional. The receptionist who took my call was impolite and abruptly stated that 12:00 PM was the absolute latest possible checkout. When I requested to speak with a manager, I was told one wouldn't be available until 8:30 AM. Surprisingly, ten minutes later, the same receptionist called me back to inform me that he had coordinated with housekeeping and could extend my checkout to 2:00 PM. When I asked if the hotel was fully booked today, he confirmed that it was not. While the extension was granted, the initial interaction was entirely uncalled for. The associate was dismissive and spoke over me before I could even finish my sentences. As a frequent traveler who relies on Hyatt, this is the first time I have encountered this type of treatment. The entire experience left me so uncomfortable and upset that I decided not to beg for a late check out; I packed up and checked out of the hotel at 10:00 AM. Additionally, upon reviewing my final folio, I noticed that a $60 valet parking fee was charged to my room. As a Globalist member staying on an eligible award, complimentary parking should be included, and I have never been charged for this on previous stays. So far, I have never received any responses from the management from the Hotel despite my 2 times request to respond my email.”
