  • Bad Housekeeping Experience

“Bad experience at the Shinola Hotel. Our room as well as another family members room was unkept, dirty, and pretty dusty. While I was told that upper Management would contact me to try to make things right, they never did. My experience was not a good one, and I can only outline my experience. We couldn’t get housekeeping to clean the room for nearly two days. I definitely would not recommend this hotel especially since Management does not appear to be concerned. Thank you. LM”

“Being a native of Detroit since the 1960s, we had followed the rebirth of the Shinola brand. We had also followed the construction of the hotel and were very curious to stay. We could not be more impressed with every aspect of this place. From the moment we checked in to our check out, we just felt that this place is very special and treated us as valued guests. We will be back the next time we are in the "D"!”

“Very nice hotel with excellent staff. However, the hotel rate is extremely high and certainly not worth the expense. While our stay was delightful, it was too expensive. We could have stayed at a neighboring hotel for less than 1/2 the price.”

“We stayed two nights here for a wedding that took place at the hotel. It is a very nice 4 star hotel (dog friendly) that includes a continental breakfast for guests (one small bowl of yogurt with fresh berries and granola per guest and 4 freshly baked pastries to share for two people along with coffee or tea). The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and the rooms are nice, fairly spacious. I always appreciate when the bathroom has a separate door for the toilet so one person can be in there and the other can still use the shower and sink. The bed was comfortable and the shower was big. The wedding we attended at the hotel was fantastic, the food was delicious and abundant (really loved the arancini, spicy chicken satay skewers, mini potato latkes with lox and the meatballs) and the staff was attentive. Quita (the manager) and the catering/service team were phenomenal. Everyone had a good time and things were run like a well oiled machine. The food came out at a good pace and the decorations/set up was beautiful. Everyone had a good time. The hotel also has a pretty nice gym on the 2nd floor with cardio equipment (including a manual treadmill, pelotons and stair master) free weights up to 60lbs and a couple of machines and benches.”

“Good vibes from the concierge all the way to the valet. Our stay and accommodations were handled so gracefully. I truly appreciated the welcome champagne from St. Julian upon check-in.The Shinola Lending Program was effective as my wife is looking forward to her new watch for her birthday. Erica provided an opulent and engaging experience along with wonderful suggestions for things to do around the city. The MVP's were definitely Erica, Marcus, I'Yana, Latonya, and Gisela. They were able to help us extend our stay arrange the watches, find perfect pastries and elevate our evening dining experience. We will definitely be back for both business and leisure. Thank you so much for our letters and exceptional service.”

“We had a beautiful stay at the Shinola Hotel to celebrate our anniversary. Champagne flowed from our check in glass to a note and small bottle in our lovely, clean room to a complimentary glass with dinner. Dinner was phenomenal. We received tokens for 2 draft beers at The Brakeman. The hotel is dimly lit and cozy with a gorgeous lounge. The Evening Bar (speak easy) was super cozy. The area is revitalized with shops, alleys, restaurants. There’s so much to do nearby. We went to the DIA on our way downtown and to Michigan Central after checkout. The one night made for a perfect nearby getaway. Thank you for everything!”

  • Great Location, but Overpriced and Disappointing Service

    4/10

    MINAKne · Solo travel · 2026-08-18

“I really wanted to like the Shinola Hotel, but unfortunately I wouldn’t stay again. The location is great, right in a lively part of Detroit, and the rooms were decent, but for the price I expected much better. Room service was honestly terrible — the food was so hard it was practically inedible. I also specifically booked a rate with breakfast included, yet at checkout I was charged for breakfast again. When I questioned it, I was told that only certain items were included and that the restaurant “should have told me” when I ordered. Nobody did, and the charge was never corrected. So essentially, I paid for breakfast twice and no one seemed particularly interested in resolving it. The one highlight was the evening bar. Great atmosphere, amazing drinks, and the staff there were genuinely lovely. Overall, though, the hotel is very overpriced for what you get, with disappointing food and even more disappointing customer service. I wouldn’t return, and as someone who recommends hotels to clients, I wouldn’t recommend it to them either.”

  • Street Noise vs Amazing Hotel

    6/10

    Gramps1967 · NONE · 2026-08-16

“The hotel itself is fantastic. The rooms are very well appointed and the guest staff is exceptional. We ate in several restaurants as well as having cocktails in several different places at the hotel, and it was outstanding. The biggest problem without question is Woodward Avenue directly adjacent to the hotel. The summertime noise created by street racing, motorcycle Clubs and other loud music from in car stereo systems makes sweeping in the rooms almost impossible. The last drag racing event outside of our room took place at 4:20 AM. It was debilitating.. I’m certain that it’s quite a bit quieter in the fall, winter and spring. In this particular case, I have to take the responsibility for failing to do the research and know that it was going to be very loud as the hotel staff indicated it was a consistent problem. With a good night sleep, this would be a spectacular hotel. The adjacent noise makes it something I would avoid in the future.”

    H9004KBrichardp · NONE · 2026-08-11

“The valet and check-in experience here was absolutely amazing. However, our room's cleanliness was a major issue. The trash from the previous guests had not been emptied prior to our stay, leaving us to discover an adult toy box and used adult supplies in a full bathroom trash can. Additionally, being right on Woodward on a Saturday night made it impossible to sleep. The glass did nothing to block the extreme loudness of passing cars, motorcycles, and stereos. I’ve never stayed in a hotel that was this loud. Lastly, the minibar fridge was barely cold, forcing us to constantly request ice just to safely store pumped breast milk. Great service upfront, but the housekeeping and room comfort fell incredibly short.”

“Breakfast was not up to the usual standards of past complimentary experiences at this hotel. Also on second morning of our stay we were denied breakfast service due to “staffing issues “ even though we are for breakfast during normal breakfast service times. This was very disappointing for a facility of this quality and expense.”
