Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the world and it was lost for centuries. Built around 800 AD from roughly two million blocks of andesite, abandoned within about 150 years as power shifted east and Islam arrived, then covered by volcanic ash and jungle until a survey commissioned by Stamford Raffles cleared it in 1814.

It is not a temple you enter. It is a monument you walk, clockwise, up nine stacked platforms — six square and three circular — through 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues arranged so that the ascent is a passage through three levels of Buddhist cosmology. The lowest reliefs, depicting the world of desire, were deliberately covered by a supporting terrace early on and are largely hidden still.

Walking all the galleries is about five kilometres.

A note on access

Visitor pressure has worn the stone badly. Since 2022 access to the upper terraces has been capped at a limited number of people a day, requires a separate ticket and a guide, and visitors must wear provided sandals to reduce abrasion on the steps.

The rules have changed more than once and are likely to change again. Check the current position before you travel rather than assuming, and book the upper-terrace slot ahead if you want it.

Sunrise from the monument itself is no longer generally available; the sunrise viewpoints are on the hills nearby, which is a different and arguably better experience with the volcanoes behind.

A city with a sultan

Yogyakarta is the only part of Indonesia still governed by a monarchy. The Sultan of Yogyakarta is also the province's governor, a constitutional arrangement granted because the court supported the republic during the independence struggle. The kraton, the palace complex, is still a working court with its own gamelan orchestras and batik workshops.

The city is the cultural capital of Java — batik, silver, shadow puppetry and a large student population.

Prambanan, twenty minutes east, is the Hindu counterpart to Borobudur, built around fifty years later, with three tall temples to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma and a Ramayana ballet performed in the grounds in the dry season.

Merapi, north, is among the most active volcanoes on earth and erupts regularly enough that the villages on its flanks have evacuation drills.

The six below are grouped that way.

Borobudur

Within sight of the monument.

Amanjiwo occupies a hilltop position facing Borobudur across the Kedu plain, in a circular arrangement of pavilions in local stone with the monument framed on the axis and Merapi behind it. It is the finest hotel in Indonesia and the siting is the argument.

Plataran Borobudur Resort & Spa sits closer to the monument in a set of Javanese joglo pavilions among rice fields, with a pool and a shorter walk to the gate.

Yogyakarta

The sultanate city.

Hotel Tentrem Yogyakarta occupies a large property with a spa, a pool and an interior drawing on Javanese craft, and it is the most comfortable hotel in the city.

Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta sits in a former royal guesthouse built in the 1850s beside the sultan's pleasure grounds, restored, with a pool and a heritage wing.

Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta occupies a position in the city with a large pool, a spa and family facilities.

The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta sits in a 1918 colonial building on Malioboro with a courtyard, a pool and the street markets outside.

What we have left off

The homestays across the villages around Borobudur are excluded, and staying in one puts you among people whose families have lived beside the monument for generations. They are guest houses rather than hotels.

What to do

Book the upper terraces ahead if you want them, and check the current rules. The lower galleries and the reliefs are open without the extra ticket and are the better part anyway.

Watch sunrise from Punthuk Setumbu or Setumbu hill rather than the monument, with the stupas emerging from mist and Merapi behind.

See Prambanan in the late afternoon and stay for the Ramayana ballet if it is running, performed outdoors with the temples lit behind the stage.

Go into the kraton in Yogyakarta in the morning when the gamelan is playing, and to a batik workshop where the wax is applied by hand with a canting.

Eat gudeg, jackfruit slow-cooked in palm sugar and coconut milk for hours, which is Yogyakarta's own dish and sweeter than visitors expect.

Practical notes

Yogyakarta's international airport at Kulon Progo is about an hour from the city; Borobudur is an hour northwest of Yogyakarta.

May to September is the dry season and the best window. The rains run October to April. It is hot and humid year round.

Merapi's status changes and access to its flanks is restricted when the alert level rises. Follow local instruction.

Every hotel bookable around Borobudur

Do you have to book the upper terraces?

Since 2022 upper-terrace access is capped, ticketed separately, guided and requires provided sandals. Rules have changed repeatedly, so check.

Can you watch sunrise from Borobudur?

Not generally now. The hill viewpoints nearby give the monument in mist with the volcanoes behind, which many prefer.

Why does Yogyakarta have a sultan?

The court backed the republic at independence and the sultanate retained its status. The Sultan is also the provincial governor.

How many nights?

Four. Two at Borobudur and two in Yogyakarta.
