The rock at Langkawi's northwestern tip is around 550 million years old, which makes it the oldest exposed geology in Southeast Asia. The island became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2007, and the rainforest growing on it is older than the Amazon.

That forest runs to the sea. On most tropical islands the vegetation has been cleared back from the beaches; on the northwestern corner of Langkawi it is protected, and the resorts there were built into it rather than in place of it. You get hornbills and dusky langurs from the balcony because the trees are still there.

Where the forest meets the sand

Langkawi is about 30 kilometres across with an airport in the middle, and the coast divides clearly.

Datai Bay and the northwest is the protected corner: rainforest to the waterline, two of the best resorts in Asia, and no development beyond them. It is 40 minutes from the airport and there is nothing else out there, which is the point.

Pantai Cenang and the southwest is the busy strip: a long beach, bars, water sports, restaurants and the duty-free shops. Langkawi is a duty-free island, which is why alcohol is unusually cheap here and why Malaysians come.

Tanjung Rhu and the north has a long quiet beach and limestone karsts offshore.

Kuah, in the southeast, is the town and the ferry port, and it is not where you stay.

The nine below are grouped by coast.

Datai Bay and the northwest

Rainforest to the beach. The protected corner.

The Datai Langkawi occupies a valley in the rainforest above Datai Bay with villas among the trees, two pools, a nature centre with resident naturalists and a beach at the bottom. It is the finest resort in Malaysia and the wildlife is genuinely at the door.

The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort sits on the same bay in the forest with a beach, a large pool and a coral nursery run on the property. It shares the setting and costs meaningfully less.

The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi occupies a hillside above the western coast with villas, private pools and views over the Andaman Sea, and it is set back from the beach.

Tanjung Rhu and the north

A long quiet beach with limestone offshore.

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi sits on the northern coast with a private beach, a spa on its own island and mangrove access. It is the quietest of the large resorts.

The St. Regis Langkawi occupies a beachfront position on the northwest with villas, a large pool and a level of comfort that suits families.

Pantai Cenang and the southwest

The busy strip. Beach bars, restaurants and the shops.

The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa occupies a beachfront site on the southwestern coast with a marina, a private beach and the most polished service on this side.

Casa del Mar Langkawi sits on Pantai Cenang in a low-rise property with a pool, a garden and the shortest walk to the restaurants and bars.

Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi occupies a beachfront position on the same strip with mature gardens, several pools and full family facilities.

Berjaya Langkawi Resort sits on a private stretch in the southeast with a large site, several pools and rates well below the northwestern resorts.

What we have left off

The guest houses and budget chalets along Pantai Cenang are excluded, and they are how a great many visitors do Langkawi cheaply. They are guest houses rather than hotels.

What to do

Take the SkyCab up Gunung Machinchang, which climbs to 700 metres and ends at a curved pedestrian bridge suspended over the forest. Go early; the queues build and cloud closes the view.

Go into the mangroves at Kilim Geoforest Park by boat, through limestone karsts, with eagles, monitor lizards and bat caves. Choose an operator that does not feed the eagles, which several still do.

Walk the forest with a naturalist. The northwestern resorts run guided walks and the difference between walking through rainforest and walking through it with someone who knows the calls is substantial.

Island-hop to Pulau Dayang Bunting for the freshwater lake, and to Pulau Payar marine park for the snorkelling.

Buy alcohol and chocolate, because the island is duty-free and it is genuinely cheap.

Practical notes

Langkawi's airport has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Penang, and ferries run from Kuala Perlis and Penang.

November to April is the dry season and the best window. May to October is wetter, with September and October the heaviest. Rain here tends to come in short intense bursts rather than all day.

Langkawi is in Kedah, a more conservative state. Dress modestly away from the resorts and note that alcohol, while cheap, is not sold everywhere.

Questions people actually ask

Is the rainforest actually at the beach?

On the northwestern corner, yes, and it is protected. Elsewhere on the island it has been cleared back.

Datai Bay or Pantai Cenang?

Datai Bay for the forest, the wildlife and quiet. Pantai Cenang for restaurants, bars and a livelier beach. Forty minutes apart.

Is it really duty-free?

Yes, the whole island, which is why alcohol is far cheaper here than the rest of Malaysia.

How many nights?

Five. Four on one coast with a day of island-hopping.
