Not exactly in the city center so a tad out of the way from the city but good for business functions. It is perhaps one of the greenest hotels out there with spa, swimming pool, basketball courts and badminton courts. Plenty of things to keep you busy and good services as I opted for room services. A bit more variety would be good.

“酒店环境很好,有大花园两个湖泊。这个季节住店还能看到红枫。”
Probably best avoided which is a shame.

“Don’t get me wrong, this is a beautiful hotel in beautiful grounds BUT......
You need the name and address in Chinese because taxi drivers don’t have a clue about it. Even when on the extensive grounds there was confusion on which way to turn to find the hotel. Then there was the fact that they had lost our reservations and didn’t know what to do with the confirmation numbers we had. Never mind, just book a couple of rooms. Except their credit card machines rejected the seven different (foreign) credit cards we offered - Visa, Mastercard & Amex. I ended up having to go to an ATM and get out (on one of the rejected cards) the full amount in cash. It wasn’t a problem with the card issuer - the rejection was instantaneous before their machines had had any time to communicate with the issuer.
Fortunately I was able to call a good Chinese friend on WeChat who spoke to the front desk (English skills are limited as is the case with hotel information) which helped a little
But if you are not Chinese with Chinese credit cards, probably best avoided. Which is a shame as it is a beautiful hotel. ”
Beautiful Property--just not convenient

“Stayed here for a conference that took place in the adjacent Conference Center. This is a beautiful small hotel/guest house. Only a little over 100 rooms. The rooms are very large for a Chinese Hotel and are five star type rooms. I found the staff to be very helpful and courteous and their English was pretty good--even the cooks took my orders in English. There is only one restaurant--with a huge buffet both for breakfast and also lunch/dinner. Wifi was very good. The setting is in the middle of a huge garden/park complex which is simply gorgeous! You don't feel like you are in an urban area but rather a Chinese garden!
The downside is that you are very, very isolated. It is quite a hike to the closest subway--you have to get a taxi. Downtown Shanghai or even Pudong Financial district is some distance. So staying here is not convenient if your goal is sightseeing or meetings in downtown Shanghai. But if you are doing business in the near by tech park or just need a nice place before/after your flights it is really excellent. The only other downside is that the recreation center is not located in the hotel but about a ten minute walk away on the other side of the park--so good for exercise but you have to plan your time.
All in all I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the Dong Jiao Guest House was and greatly enjoyed my stay for four nights.”
Luxury value near Zhangjiang

“My business partner and I stayed here for 2 nights. The location is remote far away from city but near Zhangjiang industry and development district. The garden is beautiful and venue quiet and about 30 minutes drive from Pudong airport and near the elite villa district of shanghai. The hotel room is well appointed and online prices are great. The guest number was not high so the hotel staff were quite laid back. The service quality is great and we had a dinner at jia Yan or family banquet restaurant there with seafood greatly cooked and presented.”

Perfect Experience

“We stayed at one of the hotel suites after our wedding ceremony. Overall the experience was excellent.
The guest room building is deep in the back of the huge lot, which is, in fact, like a park. Shuttle service between the buildings was provided.
The suite was spacious with well-maintained classic furniture. The room was decorated for our wedding before we checked in. Separate bathtub and shower were provided in the bathroom. The suite also had the thickest curtain I have ever seen. The room was completely dark when we got up at 9.
They offer a large variety of food for the breakfast but only until 10 am.
As for the location, it is not too far away from the metro station or the maglev to the airport. Parking was free in on the surface or the underground lot.”
Accommodation only

“Accommodation room was of very good quality, cleanliness and amenity. What was a shock though was the lack of any other type of amenity in the lobbly or elsewhere. Yes a restaurant was available but fully booked both nights we tried. The lobby bar was a joke with nothing but warm beer or very chilled red wine...weird...coffeee, expensive and no readily identifiable as coffee, more lukewarm water....English not spoken by most staff which also presented problem. Front desk was capable although international credit cards were a hit or miss, accepted some days and not others? Out of town and isolated.”
Oasis in metropolitan

“Shanghai Donjao Guest Hotel is amazingly beautiful with 3 peaceful lakes and huge gardens. Classic interior design and delicious food let the stays more comfortable and relaxing. The huge garden , lakes and lakeside restauramts with carefully reserved nature are especially unique in any metropolitan, not mentioned in Shaghai. People can easily sence quality balance between life and works.

“Stayed here for my first two nights in Shanghai. It has China Presidential history, amazing grounds providing a peaceful and luxurious environment with very helpful staff. Would be pleased to stay here again for events on the East side of the city.

“Very nice environment and rooms with plenty of space. Good restaurants and excellent service. I was there on a business meeting during January and price was very reasonable. Plenty of nature environment with a beautiful park where you can walk and jog.”
Not good service
6/10
travelogue88 · Business · 2015-09-04
“The hotel is nice and in nice grounds. The service however is way below any five star hotel. The reception staff is inattentive, cannot even process simple tasks such as credit card guarantee and the checkout process is very long. The bar service is very unpleasant and the hostess staff at the entrance of the restaurants is not welcoming.”

“It was the worst possible travel day - 5 hours on a flight that never left Pudong Airport. But our luck seemed to return - we were sent for a late night supper and overnight stay at the cush and amazing surroundings at the State Guest House. 15 chefs descended on the dining rooms, making fine Chinese delicacies for the asking. We entered our suite to discover beautiful furnishings, fine amenities, immaculate floors and linens, and something we had never seen in all our travels (admittedly, not at this level of luxury) - TV could be watched through the bathroom mirror!
If you get delayed, stay here. Or just stay here. The grounds are beautiful and serene after the hustle of the city, and the food was superb. The service was first class all the way.”

“My wife and I stayed here courtesy of the airline when our flight home from Shanghai was cancelled. We were a little concerned about the potential quality of a hotel selected by the airline for 200+ passengers that were inconvenienced. As it turned out, this was a great hotel, about 1/2 hour from the Shanghai Pudong airport. The lobby and common areas were nicely decorated. We had a very nice room with a king size bed and a twin bed. We had a buffet dinner that included a variety of meat and vegetable options. The breakfast buffet was also very good with fruits, pastries and egg dishes. The hotel staff was courteous and helpful. We had a very pleasant experience.”
Good hotel but not very good service

“Hotel is located in park area of Pudong far from Shanghai downtown. Hotel is good but service may be better. Breakfast is poor (included in room rate). Pool was closed during my stay but nobody from staff at reception informed me about it. Credit card was not accepted so I paid cash.”
All is good, except location and barking dog
6/10
WilliamB956 · Business · 2013-10-30
“Every morning there is a BIG dog barking. So the peaceful first cup of coffee can't be enjoyed except with headphones. It takes a long distance to get out of the extensive grounds, and even then you are in the middle of industrial nowhere. Rooms are beautiful, breakfast buffet is excellent, staff is delightful, but the Marriott or Ramada very nearby are vastly superior in terms of taking a stroll with little restaurants and bars and shops, and separate pedestrian walking instead of at the edge of car ways”
Extreme service

“I never expected such a great service in China! Service was perfect for welcome, room service, restaurants, concierge. Rooms are very nice and huge. Hotel is very quite, food is at top level. Internet is available in rooms trough wire, but not wireless.
There is a nice park with lakes.
The hotel is 5' from the nearest metro-station: you need a taxi to go out.”
