Ireland has a category of hotel that barely exists elsewhere: the castle estate. Not a converted keep with a few rooms, but genuine landed properties — a castle or a manor with several hundred to a few thousand acres of grounds, a river or a lake, and the field sports that went with them.

The reason there are so many is history. The Anglo-Irish landed estates were built over three centuries, most of the families left or ran out of money over the twentieth century, and the buildings were too large and too expensive to be anything else. A number were bought and restored at enormous cost.

The west, and why it holds them

They are concentrated in the west and southwest, in Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry, because that is where the estates were and where the landscape justifies them: Connemara's bog and mountain, the Burren's limestone, the lakes of Killarney and the Atlantic coast.

It is also the part of Ireland worth driving. Dublin is on the other side of the country and the interior is not the point.

The distances are moderate — Galway to Killarney is about four hours, Shannon airport is central to most of it — and the roads in the west are narrow, slow and worth taking slowly.

The nine below run roughly north to south.

Mayo and Connemara

The northwest. Bog, mountain and the largest estates.

Ashford Castle occupies a thirteenth-century castle on 350 acres at Cong, on the shore of Lough Corrib, with falconry, clay shooting, a cinema, a golf course and a level of service that is the best in Ireland. It was owned by the Guinness family for eighty years.

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel sits in Connemara on 700 acres of woodland with a salmon river running past the door, a walled garden and a bar where the fishing is discussed. It is the least formal of the great estates and many people prefer it for that.

Glenlo Abbey Hotel occupies an abbey estate outside Galway on the shore of Lough Corrib with a golf course, and a restaurant in two restored Orient Express carriages parked on the grounds.

Clare and Limerick

The middle west, near Shannon airport.

Dromoland Castle occupies a castle on 450 acres at Newmarket-on-Fergus with a golf course, falconry and a walled garden, fifteen minutes from Shannon airport. It is the most convenient of the estates.

Adare Manor sits at Adare on 840 acres with a formal manor house restored to an extraordinary standard, a golf course that has hosted a Ryder Cup and gardens along the river Maigue. It is the most lavish hotel in Ireland.

Kerry and the southwest

Killarney, Kenmare and the Ring of Kerry.

Sheen Falls Lodge occupies 300 acres outside Kenmare on the Sheen river with waterfalls in the grounds, salmon fishing and a good restaurant.

The Killarney Park Hotel sits above Kenmare bay with gardens running to the water, a spa and a long-standing reputation among returning guests.

Park Hotel Kenmare occupies a position in Killarney beside the national park with a spa, a pool and the shortest walk to the town.

Donegal

The far northwest, and the least visited.

Lough Eske Castle occupies a castle on the shore of Lough Eske in 43 acres of grounds, with a spa and the Blue Stack mountains behind. It is four hours north of Shannon and almost nobody goes.

What we have left off

The country house bed and breakfasts across the west are excluded, and in Ireland they are a genuine institution with some of the best breakfasts in Europe. They are guest houses rather than hotels.

What to do

Drive the coast. The Wild Atlantic Way runs 2,500 kilometres from Donegal to Cork and the western sections through Connemara, the Burren and the Dingle peninsula are the best of it.

Fish, shoot or hawk. The estates run these properly and a morning with a falcon on your arm in Connemara is not something most hotels can arrange.

See the Cliffs of Moher early or late, and the Burren, which is a limestone pavement full of Arctic and Mediterranean plants growing side by side.

Go to Inis Mór, the largest Aran island, by ferry from Rossaveal, for Dún Aonghasa on its cliff edge.

Eat and drink well. Irish food has changed enormously and the seafood on this coast is outstanding. Have a pint somewhere with music that was not scheduled.

Practical notes

Shannon is the most convenient airport for the middle west; Knock serves Mayo, Kerry serves the southwest and Dublin is three to four hours away by road.

May, June and September are the best months. July and August are busiest. Winter is wet, dark and atmospheric, with fires lit and much lower rates.

It rains. Not constantly, but on part of most days, and the weather changes hourly. Pack accordingly and do not let it change the plan.

Questions people actually ask

Are these really castles?

Several are genuine medieval or nineteenth-century castles on working estates. Others are manor houses at similar scale. All have the grounds.

How far apart are they?

Galway to Killarney is about four hours on slow roads. Two or three estates in a week is a comfortable pace.

Is Dublin worth adding?

It is on the far side of the country. Treat it as a separate trip or bookend the flights with a night.

How many nights?

Six. Two estates for three nights each, with the driving between them.
