San Diego is not one destination, it is three, and they sit far enough apart that choosing badly means driving through the other two every day. The bay and the downtown Gaslamp Quarter are the urban version: walkable, dense, with the ballpark and the restaurants. Balboa Park and the zoo are the cultural version, on a mesa just north of downtown. And the coast, running from Coronado round to La Jolla and Del Mar, is the beach version, spread over thirty miles.

Visitors routinely book downtown because it is cheapest and central-sounding, then spend the week driving to La Jolla and back. Or they book La Jolla for the coastline and discover that dinner downtown is a forty-minute round trip.

Choosing which San Diego you came for

The honest answer is that you cannot have all three without a car and some driving, and the right move is to pick the version that matches the trip and treat the rest as day outings.

Downtown and the bay work if you want walkability, restaurants and the ballpark, with the zoo fifteen minutes away. Coronado is a short bridge or ferry from downtown and gives you a genuine beach with the urban side still accessible. La Jolla and the northern coast give you the best coastline in Southern California and commit you to driving for everything else.

The nine below are grouped by which version they belong to.

Downtown, the bay and the Gaslamp

Walkable, central, and the only part of San Diego where you can leave the car for two days.

Pendry San Diego sits at the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter with a rooftop pool, the best restaurants of any hotel in the city and rooms that are considerably more designed than downtown convention. It is the pick if the trip is urban.

InterContinental San Diego occupies a bayfront tower with rooms looking across the water to Coronado and the marina below. It is the most straightforwardly comfortable hotel downtown, and a walk to the Gaslamp restaurants.

Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego is the enormous twin-tower property on the waterfront with the highest hotel bar on the west coast, a large pool deck and every facility a family needs. Ask for a bay-facing room; the city-facing ones are a different hotel.

The US Grant is the 1910 landmark on Broadway, restored, with a lobby that is the most impressive interior downtown and a position two blocks from the Gaslamp and the trolley.

Coronado, the compromise

An island across the bay, ten minutes by bridge or fifteen by ferry, with the best city-adjacent beach in California.

Hotel del Coronado is the 1888 red-roofed Victorian on the sand, one of the most recognisable buildings in America, and it remains a genuinely good beach hotel rather than only a landmark. Book in the original Victorian building rather than the newer wings if the history is the point.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort sits on a peninsula in the bay south of the village with a marina, tennis and a quieter, more resort-like operation. It is the family choice on Coronado.

La Jolla and the northern coast

The best coastline in the region: coves, cliffs, seals, and the Torrey Pines reserve. Thirty minutes from downtown without traffic, considerably more with it.

La Valencia Hotel sits above La Jolla Cove in a pink Mediterranean building from 1926, with the best position on the Southern California coast and a village of restaurants at the door. It is the most romantic hotel in San Diego County.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines occupies a Craftsman-style building beside the Torrey Pines reserve and above the golf course, with cliff walks from the door and a very good restaurant. It is the quietest and most scenic stay in the county.

Fairmont Grand Del Mar is the large Mediterranean-style resort inland at Del Mar, with two golf courses, a spa and the highest service standard in the region. It is twenty minutes from the beach, which is the trade for the grounds.

What we have left off

The Mission Bay water resorts are excluded. They are excellent for young families and they sit twenty minutes from both downtown and La Jolla, which means you drive past the two better versions of San Diego every day.

What to do in each version

Balboa Park deserves a full day and most visitors give it two hours for the zoo. The park itself holds fifteen museums, a Spanish colonial revival architectural ensemble and the botanical building, and it is free to walk.

On the coast, the La Jolla cove seals, the Torrey Pines cliff trails and the tide pools at low water are the three that matter. Sunset at Windansea or Torrey Pines beach is the correct end to a day.

Cross into Mexico for a day if you have the time and the documents; Tijuana's food scene has become genuinely serious and it is twenty minutes from downtown.

Eat fish tacos, drink the beer, which is the best in America by volume of good breweries, and go to a Padres game if the season allows, because the ballpark is one of the best in the country.

Practical notes

San Diego's airport is five minutes from downtown, which is unusual and useful. A car is close to essential unless you are staying downtown and staying there.

The weather is the most consistent in the United States, around 21 degrees year round. May and June bring the marine layer, locally called May Grey and June Gloom, which means overcast mornings at the coast. September and October are the warmest and clearest.

The water is colder than people expect, around 18 degrees in summer.

Questions people actually ask

Downtown or the coast?

Downtown for walkability and restaurants, the coast for the scenery. Coronado is the genuine compromise and the reason it costs what it does.

Is a car necessary?

Unless you are staying downtown for a short trip, yes. The three versions of San Diego are not connected by useful transit.

Is the zoo worth it?

Yes, and pair it with the rest of Balboa Park rather than treating the park as a car park for the zoo.

How many nights?

Four. Two on the coast and two downtown works well if you are willing to change hotels.
